MARKET NEWS

  • MND — Home Prices Moved Up Even Faster in January Despite Higher Rates. “According to some, higher rates will surely bring a quicker end to what was already an unsustainable trajectory for home prices. According to others, home prices are almost exclusively concerned with supply and demand, regardless of rates.”
  • Fannie Mae — Home Sales Slowing as Mortgage Rates Continue to Rise. “In housing, the new home sales figure was below our expectations and will likely lead to a downward revision to our near-term new home sales forecast. While we expect the ongoing lack of existing homes for sale will still support demand for new homes this year, the slowdown in sales over the past two months may end up reflecting a turning point going forward given the recent rapid rise in mortgage rates, hitting 4.4 percent as of the latest weekly survey from Freddie Mac.”
  • Scotsman Guide — Homeownership costs remain less pricey than renting. “Despite the recently tightened affordability of homeownership, buying a home is still a better financial option than renting in more than half of U.S. markets, according to Attom Data Solutions’ 2022 Rental Affordability Report. Owning a median-priced home costs less than the average rent for a three-bedroom property in 58% of the 1,154 U.S. counties analyzed, meaning that major homeownership expenses take up a lesser portion of the average local wage than rents do.”
